For me, most short stories lack the ability to make you want to know more about it, but the short story “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker had just that ability. The short story three characters, but there is really only two main characters. The story shows how a mother sees and treats her two daughters. Her first daughter Dee experiences changes in the way she sees her culture. At the beginning of the story Dee is shown as disliking her culture, but at the end of the story she loves all of the old cultural items but all for the wrong reasons. She only likes the stuff to display the culture not live in the culture. The mother changes throughout the story through the way she treats her daughters.
