Grace Johnson Kendrick HELA 9, 4th Hour 5 April 2024 The Power Chaos Can Hold This one quote, “We don’t even know how strong we are until we are forced to bring that hidden strength forward. In times of tragedy, of war, of necessity, people do amazing things. The human capacity for survival and renewal is awesome.” (Isabel Allende), displays the idea that we can go through terrible things, yet we can survive as well. This brings forth the truth about how people can encounter tough situations but come out stronger, including being a bit more chaotic. Each of them was introduced, possessing distinct characteristics. Many of those characters changed from the beginning to the end, likely because they’ve been trapped on an island for who knows how long. This quote, “At once the crowd surged after it, poured down the rock, leapt on to the beast, screamed, bit, tore. There were no words, and no movements but the tearing of teeth and claws” (Golding 153) shows how such acts can be perceived as monstrous when in reality, they are just boys trying to survive on an Island. Especially when the author shows, “A semicircle of little boys, their bodies streaked with colored clay, sharp sticks in their hands, standing on the beach making no noise at all” (Golding 200) making the realization that, in turn, they are innocent beings. This idea of the lack of innocence being a contribution to insanity can be seen in other instances as well. In the Zimbardo experiment, which took place in a cell within Standford University, many of the participants turned out insane and inhumane.
