APUSH P4 11/30/15 SRQS Chapter 13 – IMPENDING CRISIS How were the boundary disputes in Oregon and Texas resolved? • • Britain and the United States both claimed sovereignty in the Northwest, a dispute initially resolved by an 1818 treaty allowing “joint occupation” by settlers from either nation. • • Considerable numbers of Americans migrated to the Northwest in the 1840s. Despite conflicts with Indians, these migrants were able to establish permanent settlements and urged the U.S. government to solidify American claims in the region.
Danielle L. McGuire’s At the Dark End of the Street, “an important, original contribution to civil rights historiography”, discusses the topic of rape and sexual assault towards African American women, and how this played a major role in causing the civil rights movement (Dailey 491). Chapter by chapter, another person's story is told, from the rape of Recy Taylor to the court case of Joan Little, while including the significance of Rosa Parks and various organizations in fighting for the victims of unjust brutality. The sole purpose of creating this novel was to discuss a topic no other historian has discussed before, because according to McGuire they have all been skipping over a topic that would change the view of the civil rights movement.

Prosecutors have the power to send offenders away which allows them to make harsh decisions. They offer plea bargains to offenders which often will enable them to do time in prison. Pfaff stated that "as long as prosecutors simply use the tough laws as a bargaining chip, not real punishment, legislators can reap the political benefits of looking tough on crime while avoiding difficult financial decisions" (Pfaff, 2017, P136). Prosecutors offer a plea bargain to get rid of cases quickly and not allow offenders to go to trial because they might receive more prison
Prosecutors have lots of discretion when it comes to deciding whether or not to charge people. Next, he or she makes an initial appearance before a magistrate. At this time, decisions regarding bail are also made. Sometimes—but not always—the next step is for the defendant to appear at a preliminary hearing, where it is decided whether or not probable cause exists that the defendant committed the crime he or she is charged with. Next, a grand jury hears the state's evidence on the case and may or may not bring back an indictment against the defendant.
McGrath Chapter 1 Within the first chapter of McGrath's book he lays out his understanding of Apologetics as the ability to relate the Christian faith to contemporary culture today. As I began reading this book we began a study on 1 Peter. It was really smooth sailing until we came to 1 Peter 3:15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, (ESV). This one verse ignited more discussion than any topic we had covered in the two chapters before.
Coming into this analysis of chapter six was talking about starting to get the project off the ground and the parts Mr. West and the Microkids played in the project. When Mr. West was working on the project he started to learn more and something that stood out to me was that not everything worth doing is worth doing well, there is no such thing as a perfect design. When I read that part from the text it touch home to me because it’s just like in life not everything in life is worth doing or even perfect. Now the Microkids had an important part in the project, there job was to write the microcode and have it done by a certain time. Now one way they thought they could improve performance on the project was through competition.

The prosecution represents the state/the victims in criminal trials. A prosecutor’s responsibilities are to be professional, seek justice, and strive for the truth. Prosecutors live up to their responsibilities by gathering evidence, collecting witness testimonies, and obtaining other information to present a case against the defendant. Throughout the movie My Cousin Vinny, Jim Trotter is the prosecuting attorney. In the entire movie he is using evidence and witness testimonies to try to get the jury to find Billy Gambini and Stan Rothenstein guilty of killing the clerk in the store.
Law enforcement has many tools they use to when determining how to approach a call. Whether the call is a traffic stop, a domestic call, or looking for a suspect to a crime. They all use their experience and judgement or better known as police discretion. Officers use their years of experience and knowledge to decide how to approach a situation. They have to come up with strategies to deal with each situation.
In the formal criminal justice process, there are important decision makers that decide whether to keep the offender in the system or dismiss the suspect with no future consequences. Suppose a law was set in place
The criminal justice system is comprised of a myriad of steps for the purpose of bringing those responsible for committing crimes to justice. There are three primary categories which make up the criminal justice system. The first category is the “Police”, who are responsible for determining the type and magnitude of the potential crime and if it did indeed occur. They will begin by investigating to determine who is involved in the crime. Once the investigation reveals the identity of the perpetrator(s) then they will seek out those responsible for the purpose of arresting them for the crimes they are accused of committing.
Within the criminal justice system there are several stakeholders such as law enforcement officials, prosecutors, juries and judges who play a critical role in the processes which are intricate to the justice system. These systems serve as a pendulum to balance the scale of justice so that no one side is unequal to the laws that are applied. Within this intricate system there are multiple steps that occur when processing felony charge(s) cases. These steps include the investigation, the arrest, arraignment, trial, sentence, and appeals (Nichols, n.d). The first step in maintaining justice involves law enforcement officers who are often the first responders when criminal acts are committed.
