Taking in toxic and harmful drugs can cause a change in the way an individual sends, receives and processes
Many times drug and alcohol abusers will blame their problems and addictions on friends and close family members. They normally say that “the reason I do drugs, and or alcohol is because of you”. They try to deflect the blame from themselves because they do not believe that they have a problem. Even though in all reality they have a big problem. If anything is mentioned about the abuser getting help they will deflect it by saying that they are fine, and they can stop using these products on their own when they want.
Alcoholism is a physical and psychological disorder of the brain that involves the chronic and exorbitant consumption of alcoholic beverages. The consumption can be in response to stressful situations, at overwhelming amounts of social activities, and even in the comfort of one's own home. Alcoholism can trigger other psychological disorders such as depression and schizophrenia, and it also has other negative consequences such as kidney failure, heart defects, and even death. An example of alcoholism in a piece of literature is Rex Walls from The Glass Castle. His actions throughout the novel have extremely detrimental consequences for his wife, children, and himself.
The family in my example is a Native American family whose household consists of grandmother, grandfather, daughter and her five children ages 17, 15,12,8, and 5. Both the grandmother and mother work at the local casino. The mother is a supervisor there and often has to work long hours to cover shifts or for special events. The oldest child is female and is in special education with a diagnosis of FASD and has become an active addict using alcohol and prescription drugs. The fifteen year old is an avid anti-drug advocate and very active in sports and school.
Responding to the opening question requires another question first be addressed: what is drug culture? Psychologist Pamela Brian defines drug culture as “the lifestyle of people who take and abuse drugs that create an altered form of consciousness” (Brian). The US Center for Substance Abuse Treatment is even more specific and defines a drug culture as one with its own history as well as shared values, beliefs, customs, traditions, rituals, and behaviors. Members of a drug culture often share similar ways of dressing, patterns of socializing, language, and styles of communication (Center). Drug cultures also tend to be localized to a certain degree (Center).
An item that has the abilities to make individual feel relaxed and numbed, but also the ability to cause the individual to become addicted and potentially ruin lives; even more critically, cause death. The location and time of the dispute at hand is, the early 1900’s in the United States of America. A new fad was sweeping the nation; which was, that of temperance. The believers of this new doctrine often stated, “that the use of alcohol was reckless and destructive and that prohibition would reduce crime and corruption, solve social problems, decrease the need for welfare and prisons, and improve the health of all Americans” (Andersen). It is common knowledge that alcoholism has been a major problem in the world, since it has been introduced as a consumable product.
Substance use disorder According to WHO, substance abuse is defined as the consumption of substances that affect the mind in levels that are considered harmful (WHO). Substance abuse covers the abuse of alcohol and drugs such as opioids, amphetamines and cocaine. Substance use disorder is therefore a condition where the use of a substance such as alcohol leads to a severe impairment in one’s ability to be a functional human being. Components of substance use disorder include addiction, dependence and abuse.
In today’s society, substance abuse is a serious issue that has many explanations as to why it occurs. Peer pressure, boredom, rebellion, etc., are all common examples of why a person uses drugs and alcohol but there is more depth to it. Individuals will often get blamed or judged on the actions they perform and do not usually think of society itself as a factor. There are relatively stable patterns of social relations that contribute to the values and decisions of humans. Three levels of social structures that surround and permeate us are macrostructures, microstructures, and patriarchy.

Alcohol is the most widely used drug in the world. The term alcohol refers to the primary alcohol ethanol. In 2015 about 89% of adults in the United States stated that they had consumed alcohol in some point of their lives. Alcohol is a demerit good, because it can have negative effects on the consumer, but the effects of alcohol consumption can also impact other people and those spill over effects are called negative externalities. Negative externalities of alcohol consumption can be for example when a person injured by bad drinking habits needs medical or psychological treatment and their family has to pay for it.
The substance abuse category has removed as the committee argues that there not be enough evidence of an intermediate state between substance use and substance dependence. The DSM–5 definitions of substance use disorder, “a cluster of cognitive, behavioral, and physiological symptoms indicating that the individual continues using the substance despite significant substance-related problems” this definition used to refer to substance addiction (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, p. 483). Addiction, substance use disorder, and dependence all refer to a chronic drug-taking condition, and for these terms are used with that intended definition. Substance abuse is now only used for research specific to that occurrence.
Many people get used to drink alcohol , and they can easily abuse; that is the problem. Alcoholism is the abuse of alcohol by people who are unable to control their drinking behavior over an extended period of time. Alcoholics are not simply people who drink alcohol; instead, their entire lives revolve around it. At first, everyone who starts drinking alcoholic beverages, thinks that its something normal, and that it's okay to do it, but what they really don't know yet, is that this particular habit has a way of turning itself into one of the worst addictions in the world.
