After reading through the second and third chapter I realized that this all is taking place in the past, when this Lithuanian family first arrived in America. I also think that this family is being exploited by the meatpacking company for cheap labor. Another thing I noticed is that the Jurgis seemed to not have been phased by the horrors of going into the slaughter house while the rest of the characters were disgusted by it. He almost seemed to be fond of it, but I think this place will slowly, but surely break down his spirit and eagerness for work.

Jurgis has finally realized the corrupt nature of the place he works at, and now can never look at the place the same way again. During the chapter, we also see Jurgis begin to question this “American dream” that so many immigrants have come here to secure. I think this is a point Sinclair is trying to make is that so many immigrants probably had their souls crushed when coming to America and doing such repetitive work for such small pay. I think Sinclair is using this breakdown to represent how soul crushing work in the packing industry was. When Jurgis attempts to fight the physical embodiment of the packing industry, Conner, he is sent to a one sided trail, and then is imprisoned for a month. Sinclair used this to show how powerful the “system” is, and how it has corrupted other areas of society to its benefit only. After being released from prison Jurgis is a mere shadow of the strong and courageous man that he was 3 years ago. This is meant to represent that Jurgis has fought the “system” and has lost completely. His family has also suffered, but not to this extent.

After the death of his wife and son Jurgis was finished with the life he had created in Packingtown. He decided to escape to the countryside, and leave everything and everyone behind. There Jurgis feels free, but the ghost of what he had left behind soon caught up with him, and he began to feel guilt for those he left behind. At first I found this to be quite selfish of him, but after he started to feel guilty about his actions I began to sympathize with him. I think Jurgis will return to what his family in Packingtown, and possibly save them from the horrors of city
