The Choices We Make in Life Have you ever found it interesting to notice two people whose lives start out close to the same but end so differently? Jurgis is the main character in the book The Jungle. The book was written by Upton Sinclair and it portrays the horrors of factory life in the early twentieth century. Jurgis was an immigrant that came to America in hopes to achieve the American Dream, only to find himself cheated out of that dream by everyone around him. In contrast to The Jungle, the movie Cinderella Man is based on the Depression Era. The main character is James who uses boxing as a way to provide for his family. The two stories begin close to the same way with hopes of an American Dream. However, The Jungle ends with those dreams being shattered whereas The Cinderella Man has a much happier ending. Despite two very different jobs, the men have similar physical traits. Their emotional traits vary greatly depending on the situations that arise. Jurgis gets married to Ona (page 8), Ona dies in childbirth (page 189) and then he becomes a lone tramp but then tries to connect with his family again and turn his life around (page 340). James was already married at the beginning of the movie and has a good relationship with his wife and kids. However, his troubles with relationships lie more in the struggles of keeping his children due to finances which leads to arguments over the wellbeing of the children. His hand heals and he is able to get a job and eventually even starts boxing again. This helps him in his relationship with his wife and children and unlike Jurgis he is able to happily provide once again in a way that was even better than
