Summary:
In chapter21 to chapter27 of Southland by Nina Revoyr, the main character Jackie explored the connection between her family history and the murder of four black boys, also, the author talked about the story of Jackie’s grandfather Frank and the people around him. In chapter21, Curtis was accused of stealing a guitar, and was assaulted by Lawson. Even though, Curtis didn’t complain about it. In chapter22, the Watts broke out. Frank left his home and went to the store, and Lois found him crazy when he came back home. In chapter23, Jackie had a quarrel with Laura. Also, she found the love relationship between Alma and Frank(chapter 26). In chapter 24, Curtis was bullied by some

For instance, Curtis was assaulted by Lawson and also the white boys. Racist who discriminate against others considered them inferior, and repel, attack them without sense of guilt because racist think those “inferior” people deserve this kind of treatment. In my opinion, discrimination is the result of arbitrary judgment. In the past, white parents might tell their children to discriminate against the black with arbitrary reason. The young generation hadn’t formed their own value, and hadn’t have the ability of judging something, and thus they believed their parents. In chapter27, Victor’s wife was raped by white men. Victor felt guilty and burdened, and chose to avoid Janie, who suffered more than him. In contrast, the character Jackson in the essay “Waiting in Line at the Drugstore”, shown a positive attitude when he was discriminated. When he experienced discrimination, he gained power from reading, be confident about his identity and enrich his soul. Both Victor and Jackson were weak to change the situation they encounter, but Jackson chose to improve himself, whereas Victor chose to
