“Racial profiling punishes innocent individuals for the past actions of those who look and sound like them…” - Benjamin Todd Jealous. Is it okay how in today 's society many innocent people are stopped by the police because of their race? Is it okay how many innocent people are often killed or injured because of their race? It’s not okay for people of color to be targeted by authorities because they “look suspicious”. The fact that this is an actual real world problem going on right now is disgusting. There are many reasons to why racial profiling is wrong. It doesn’t work, it causes death and injuries to innocent people, and it’s just humiliating and offensive to the people. The most famous one being Eric garner from New York, in 2014. Eric was a victim of racial profiling and died in the hands of the police. “The 43-year-old died while being placed under arrest for allegedly selling loose cigarettes. A cell phone recording captured the asthmatic father of six repeatedly saying ‘I can’t breathe!’ while being placed in a chokehold.” (Burke). The fact that this man died because of what he looked like is repulsive. This isn’t the first time incidents like this happened. In fact, there has been many cases just like this one, and in the end the person of color always dies while the officer remains free with no charge. Another study shows “So far in 2015, U.S. police killed 776 people, 161 of whom were completely unarmed at the time of their death.” (News Desk). If anyone was ever a victim of racial profiling they would be offended. Who wouldn’t? The process of being stopped everyday, or getting arrested, or having a family or friend killed or hurt just because of race or color is truly disturbing. “The overwhelming majority of the respondents (89%) indicated they had an experience with racism or discrimination. Of those who did encounter discrimination, approximately three-quarters reported some lasting mental health or emotional and psychological effect.” (Carter). Being discriminated or racial profiled isn’t something pleasant, it’s insulting and just a terrible feeling to be through. Imagine everyday; constantly being targeted by the police, and getting arrested easily and getting hurt or even die just because you’re not the same race as the authorities. Everyone thought they could trust the authorities to keep them safe but instead they’re scared and they’re not safe with them. Even and school kids could be bullied and be picked on, the teachers sometimes could be very biased too. Who are these people supposed to trust in to keep them
