Not Promise Tomorrow In the book A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard the main characters are Philip and Jaycee. Jaycee is a teenage girl whose life was taking away at age eleven and was kept for eighteen years not having that childhood experiences that a normal teenager would be able to experience. Philip is the man who kidnapped her for his own sick problems. He's a character that only thought about himself and not realizing or even caring what kind of life he has just took away from Jaycee. His actions affected another person's life and what kind of consequences it has had on Jaycee. “I've learned that verbal abuse can be just as damaging as physical abuse and can take longer to heal from.” ( Dugard) This quote is showing how most people don’t know that verbal abuse is just as bad as physical abuse. Verbal abuse gets into your mind. It brainwashes the person and twists their way of thinking. That person can eventually start to think everything they do is wrong like Jaycee. It was easy to brainwash jaycee and to make her think that Philip is always right because of how young she was when she got kidnapped.She doesn't have the knowledge or understanding that a eighteen year old would have because of her age. The younger you are to get kidnapped is the easiest to become brainwash and become the person that their kidnapper wants them to be. “After a couple of days of thinking, i decide on my new name and tell Phillip and Nancy my choice. I say i want to be called Allissa.” ( Dugard) This is a very important part in the book because this officially when she gives up the name jaycee and shows the readers how much control they actually have on her. Also how fast it is to have control over a little girl who's been taken. Shows the power they had over her while she was with them because of her innocent and her just trying to survive this nightmare by doing what they
