My Brother Sam is Dead

Sam and his father were very different in terms of how they wanted their country to be ran. Sam was a Patriot and his father was a Loyalist. A Patriot (also known as rebels in the book) were the colonist fighting against Britain for freedom. A Patriot wanted to be free to run their own government how they wanted. They didn't want to be under the rule of a king or queen. The Patriots were people revolting against the English monarchy. Patriots or rebels fought for what they believed was right, and look where we are now.

On the other hand, Sam’s father was a Loyalist. Loyalists were the ones fighting for the king. They believed that the king had the power and that's how they thought it should stay. The book referred to them as Lobster Backs. The Patriots called them Lobster Backs …show more content…

Sam was around sixteen years old in the story. Back in that time they are considered adults at sixteen and can drink and do stuff adults do today. But nowadays that age is eighteen to twenty-one. Sam was considered an adult even though his father still considered him as a child.

If I was in that time era and had to choose a side I would choose Loyalist. I would choose Loyalist because if you were a Patriot you and your family got attacked by the Loyalist for weapons and such. Your whole family go attacked for things and I wouldn't want to be a part of that, so of course I would choose Loyalist to protect my family.

In the book the weapon sam used and talked about a lot in the story was the “Brown Bess”. The “Brown Bess” or its real name, British Land Pattern Musket, was a weapon in the Revolutionary War used by both sides. Sam stole his father's Brown Bess to use in the war to fight against the Loyalists (Lobster Backs). The Loyalists also used them, probably more so than the Patriots.
