The American Revolution was characterized by many sides inspired by the different motivation, perceptions and interests. The characters involved were mainly patriots, loyalists and moderates. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, the loyalists were the North American colonists who remained loyal to the crown of the British; often they were refereed as royals or kings men. The patriots were referred as rebels, judgmental or Whigs. These were colonial opponents that supported the revolution. The loyalists saw the patriots’ as traitors in their mother country and saw themselves as the honorable ones who stood by the empire and the crown. Whilst from the patriots’ perspective the loyalists were just traitors too blind to the oppression of the British government, Moderates were complacent people, nonpartisan and not interested in the war and generally uninvolved. They always turn up for freebies like beer and rum given out at the rallies. They participated in urban riots and were led by “Sons of Liberty”. Amongst their actions were throwing the Stamp Act and Tea Act into the sea. They attacked the British customs officials and their houses, because they didn’t want their ships seized or inspected by the officials. The gang carried out the coercive side of the revolution by threatening and harming the colonialist who spoke against the movement or didn’t cooperate with the boycott. Motivation; the waterfront liberty boy attained their motivation because they liked what was given to them in form of freebies. They believed that by doing so, they were fighting for their freedom.
