In the novel Amir states, “I became what I am today at the age of 12…”(Hosseini 1). I am about halfway through the novel at this time. Amir became a coward in this novel. This can be seen a few ways. One way is, watching Hassan getting raped and not doing anything about it. Another way is, hiding cash under Hassan’s bed to avoid the situation that he experienced. Finally, Amir only cares about himself and no one else.
One way Amir became the coward at the age of 12 is, he watched his so called “friend” get raped in an alley and did nothing about it. The only reason why Amir did this was because his father once told him, “There is no act wretched than stealing” (Hosseini 106). He thought by telling his father Hassan stole his money and watch it would get rid of him. In the end, Ali and Hassan ended up moving away. Finally, Amir is a coward because he only cares for himself. This can be seen when Assef is raping Hassan. In the novel it states, “In the end, I ran. I ran because I was a coward. I was afraid of Assef and what he would do to me. I was afraid of getting hurt...I actually aspired to cowardice…” (Hosseini 77). Amir actually admitted to being a coward as this event was going on.
