Despite drawbacks for his own family, Atticus was wise to defend Tom Robinson. Atticus felt it was the right thing to do. P. 75 Ch. 9 Tom Robinson would not have received a fair trial without Atticus. Atticus put his family and his reputation in danger.
This quote emphasizes Atticus' belief in the value of understanding and tolerance for others. He also teaches Scout to avoid judging others, as he says, "Before you can live a part of somebody else's life, you gotta spend a lot of time in their skin" (Chapter 28, page 316). What a person does is more important than what a person thinks. By expressing yourself to others, it tells people what your personality is like. By doing things through your actions, it will show the truth about other and people loyalty. During “To Kill A Mockingbird”, Atticus Finch showed the jury along with the audience that Tom Robinson, who was charged with the raping of Bob Ewell’s daughter Mayella Ewell, was unable to use his left side. This was important because earlier during the trial, Mayella claimed to be attacked by a left handed person.
In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is a highly respected lawyer as well as a single parent, raising his children, Jem and Scout. He makes sure to share many different kinds of lessons with both of them, but focuses on Scout because she is the youngest. He teaches his daughter to be nonjudgmental and to not form an opinion on someone based on a certain aspect, through both his words and actions. In order to help Scout grow and mature, Atticus teaches her the importance of trying to understand others and not to judge them based on appearance. It is significant for Scout, as a young child, to know the importance of seeing things from many different viewpoints and not just one.
Atticus from Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is a good dad, and compassionate. Atticus is compassionate because he cares about everyone. Scout asks Atticus is if he really is a negro lover and Atticus tells Scout he does his best to love everybody. “I do my best to love everybody…it’s never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name.”
When looking for the main character in a book, it can be arduous. You want the character who has made a substantial impact, teaches people the truly valuable lessons, and is often in crucial parts of the book. While reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee you may assume that Scout or Jem or even Boo Radley is the main character, but it is Atticus Finch. To Kill a Mockingbird is Atticus’ story because he is a part of the key moments, he teaches his children and his community the most essential lessons, and he is considerate to everyone and anyone in strenuous times.
Another reason Scout shows us she has absorbed Atticus’s lesson is because she is considerate enough to ask Uncle Jack not to tell Atticus the truth about why Francis and she were fighting, knowing this would hurt his feelings. Scout tells Uncle Jack that Atticus doesn't want “ anything I heard about him make me mad.” (114) In this particular situation, Scout shows us that she was able to put herself in Atticus’s shoes and view things from his perspective. Knowing that Atticus would get upset about the reason for her fight with Francis, she is considerate enough to ask her Uncle to keep the situation to himself. Scout could have decided to let Uncle Jack tell Atticus the real truth to the fight, but, instead, she stepped into Atticus’s shows
While in the courtroom Atticus also shows great courage. He did not go along with what Heck Tate told the court about what really happened the night Bob Ewell was found stabbed to death. Atticus put his life and career in the line; he knew, as a lawyer of the court, if he hides evidence he could be sent to jail. Like many times before, doing what was right wins over Atticus’s thinking. In addition, Atticus goes against his moral code and principles that he has always uphold, when Atticus is faced with the decision of staying by the law or forgetting it in order to do the correct thing.
After reading chapters 4-9 in the book To Kill A Mockingbird, I can tell that Atticus is a very nice man and he treats other people well because he shows it when he is talking to other people. Atticus treats his kids pretty much like any other parent would; he is lenient but sometimes hard. Most of the time he is fair to his kids. In the book, he never uses violence against his children, he prefers to use words to talk it out. In the book, Scout says, “Atticus don’t ever do anything to Jem and me in the house that he don’t do in the yard” (Lee 51).
I am going to discuss what kind of father, teacher, lawyer, and person Atticus was and is. He is a good father, he takes care of his children and is their friend yet their father at the same time. He was there for his kids when they needed him and supported them in their decisions. Helped guide his children on their life path, to give them a better future. I am going to discuss this today and give examples of Atticus in his environment on a daily basis, to give examples on what a good father he was.
Maycome, a town with people who had their slaves freed after the war and as you know most white people didn't like blacks if not the hated them, they even cheat them out of deals and so much more. The town of Maycome was a good place but it did have its bad sides such at sometime it all depends on how they take it. There are some people that don't care ware your black or white and Atticus is one of those people. Atticus also tired to defend a color person even tho he knows he isn't going to win because their isn't a judge in Maycome to give a truly fair trial to a color person just because there just a little bit dirtier then a white people. Atticus is a good man he gave everyone the benefit of a doubt.
Atticus and Alexandra learned that Jean and Hank had gone swimming the night before and the entire town had heard of it. Alexandra was furious, but Atticus remained calm and let Jean Louise tell her side of the story. Atticus did not get mad at Jean because he knew that what she did was not as big of a deal as everyone had made it out to be and she did it because she thought it would be fun and not have many consequences. Her name is Jean Louise Finch or Scout as she is often referred to as. She is the narrator of the story and most of it comes from her point of view. There are many important things that make the probably most talked about novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, what it is. Harper Lee creates a perfectly in detail story that fits the theme of truly following your beliefs in a society filled with stubborn contradictory people. Atticus Finch is the most outstanding character who strongly supports this valuable theme with his personality. As Lee represents him as a man with integrity who has wisdom, compassion and courage. He manages to remain loyal to his beliefs even when he struggles to make a difference in a town filled with ignorance and prejudice.
