“These men were somehow different from other men. They were said to have soldier’s heart” (XV). In the novel Soldier’s Heart the main character was a fifteen year old boy who no longer wanted to be a boy. He wanted to be a man. He suffered a major loss which was his Father, so it was himself, his broth, and of course his Mother. The age limit to be able to go off and fight in war was you had to be “at least” eighteen years of age. Therefore, he was off by three years but that did not stop Charley. He didn't want to be left out of the adventures and excitement of war, so he insisted on lying about his age. However, his Mother was hesitant to too this wild choice of her Son’s yet he made a value point about the money he will be receiving that he can give to her which was eleven dollars. On page 12 it states, “Charley was nearly on the edge of leaving when on June 22 they were called into formation.” As you can see, Charley was even thinking of an alternative plan which was to just leave the war in general, because it was not as grand as he thought it was going to be. His plan of leaving however failed, considering he got called to formation. So Charley went off to war.
“ “Fire!” ” (79). War was sadly not what he thought it was going to be, it certainly was adventurous though. His thoughts ran through his maze of a head constantly, about what was wrong, what was right, his life at home, his life now, the food he ate, the clothes he worse, just about anything.
