Character Analysis Of Dr. Edward George Armstrong In 'And Then There Were None'

Dr. Edward George Armstrong was one of the ten guests invited and killed on soldier island in the book And Then There Were None. He was a doctor of medicine that does house visits and the occasional on-the-table work, which got him rich and famous. Previously he worked on the prestigious Harley Street, which is a place where many famous people live. He was a man who was fast acting and quickly decisive. For example, in the book, And Then There Were None when Anthony Marston started choking, most sat there stunned and watching, while Dr. Armstrong got up and took initiative to help, “Then Dr. Armstrong jumped up and went over to him, kneeling beside him.” He is a man that takes control of a serious situation. Not only in the situation with Martson choking did Dr. Armstrong take initiative, but he also showed that same intuitiveness throughout the story when other characters lost their lives. Dr. Armstrong lived a charitable and successful life by helping others. He was trusted by his peers and his patients, and he was always dependable. When Ms. Rogers died in her sleep, Dr. Armstrong immediately confirmed her death, which quickly gave Mr. Rogers closure, “Is - she - is she -?” “Yes, she’s gone.” This closure helped Mr. Rogers swallow his sorrow and carry out his duties as a butler. Armstrong has a more deceptive and sinister side. In reality, he didn’t help people, he used them for riches and fame. “Half the women who consulted him had nothing the matter with them but boredom…” He used these women's weaknesses and exploited them, which eventually got him into a position he didn’t deserve. One “accident” was the death of Lousia Mary Clees, but in actuality, Dr. Armstrong was drunk and killed her. These actions gave him the rarely used reference of “A man whose deceptiveness and ambiguous nature led him to false riches and fam.” His wrongdoings are symbolized by an operating table, in which he killed Lousia Mary
