Characters go through transformations within a short amount of time and reader’s interpretations often evolve during the change. Tub and Frank, characters in the short story Hunters in the Snow written by Tobias Wolff, walk into a new pair of shoes after the fearless leader, Kenny, suddenly loses all power. Kenny is introduced in the fourth paragraph with his buddies obviously headed on a hunt. Throughout the whole story Kenny is joking around or teasing Tub or Frank, but mainly Tub. Kenny begins to mess around pointing his gun at various objects, saying “I hate you”, then shooting. He does not have any desire to meet anyone else’s needs or help other people in meeting their own. In the first scene Kenny is driving a truck and is over an hour late to pick up Tub while he is left on the street corner in the snow. Then, when he finally picks him up, he doesn’t feel the least bit sorry. His first actions as a character are egotistical; he does not even care about Tub and how cold he must have been. His bold character chooses to work as if it is every man for themselves, unless he needs something. When Tub needed help getting over a fence, “Frank and Kenny could have helped him … but they didn’t” (Wolff 88). Kenny drags along his friends to go on this hunting trip “where [he] wanted to hunt” and Tub and Frank both show a disinterest in the hunt. Kenny hangs Frank’s secrets over his head saying that he “won’t say a word … about a certain babysitter” (Wolff 87). Most likely, the author had a reason for the names of each character as root of Kenny, “Ken”, in literature means knowledge and his knowledge is something that keeps him the leader of the group. Kenny recognizes that his knowledge keeps him ahead of the group and because he knows a bad secret about Frank, he does not have the power to turn against him. Kenny continues to pick on both characters throughout the hunt and is blatantly rude to Tub all throughout the story. Kenny’s leadership takes a bad turn when Tub shoots him. Kenny, an icon to the others, is now weak and does not have any of the power he once had. He then has to rely on the other characters to save his
