While this novel is extraordinary in many different aspects the struggles that occur are far from personal, they are instead struggles that all humans deal with both internaly and physically and are represented by each of the characters in the story. Each character in this story represents two qualities that all human beings posses and by their actions and struggles they show the downfalls of those qualities. Amir represents selfishness and jealousy as shown by his cowardness and the way he deals with the struggles he encounters. From the very beginning Amir possesses a certain amount of resentment and jealousy towards Hassan because he receives more attention and warmth from Baba than he does. He actions towards Hassan are humiliating and often leave him feeling ashamed but because of his jealousy he continues to take advantage of Hassan’s devotion. His jealousy of Hassan drives him to crave Baba’s love even more and when the opportunity came to make him proud with that last blue kite Amir was blinded by his jealousy and instead of helping Hassan or giving up the kite he froze at watched as Hassan was raped. As the alledged son of Baba’s servant he was constantly around Amir and looked up to his cowardly friend the way a dog would. Even as Amir took advantage of him and caused him to fall in the path of danger, Hassan’s devotion didn’t falter and his beliefe that Amir saw him as a friend and would do the same for him was his ultimate downfall. Because he refused to see Amir’s own downfalls Hassan found himself all alone when he faced Assef in that alley way and then later when he faced the men that killed both him and his wife. These qualities that make up Hassan make up a part of all humans but at high levels they become potent to our lives and cause us to stumble blindly in the shadows of others who only have their own interests in
