Behind a team, someone always holds it together, the coach. Being a coach is not an easy job, as Mr. Galanter proves in The Chosen by Chaim Potok. However, no matter how hard things get for the team, Mr. Galanter is always there, cheering his team on in the sport that they love. So what goes into making a coach? How is Mr. Galanter always there when needed and how does he help the team in exactly the right way they need? This is especially evident during baseball games, when he constantly cheers on his team. “Mr. Galanter stood alongside third base, shouting his words of encouragement at us” (13). Galanter has the perfect balance to being a good coach, and by going out of his way to help Reuven, goes from good to an outstanding coach. The three most important traits for a good coach to have are compassion, support, and a competitive personality. Each of these three traits benefits the coach and the team in different ways. With compassion, the students can relate to the coach and the students can have comfort in the knowledge that their coach will always be there with kindness for them. Support strengthens the team and lets the team know that the coach will always cheer them on. Lastly, a competitive coach orders the team and helps them strategize, sparks the team’s inner competitive spirit, and allows them to perform better as they will have more motivation to win.
