Quinn’s father died in Afghanistan when he was young. This led Quinn to struggle with the responsibility. His absence makes. Paul stepped in, supporting Quinn’s whole family taking responsibility and playing the role of a father. Quinn has seen firsthand Paul doing good things which is what makes it so difficult to do the right thing while going against Paul. “ I mean, it’s Paul. This is the same guy. I’ve seen carrying my mom up the front steps for God sake." This shows Quinn, struggling with what to do early in the story. Paul has supported Quinn and his family very well for a long time, making whether or not to speak up so hard. Another example of Quinn conflicting on what to do as one him and Jill went to Burger King at lunch. They discussed a time when Paul beat up another boy, but this time in defence for Quinn. Quinn says “ they’re like side-by-side in my head right now.”(128) “ Paul had done it for me. I felt sick.”(128) This shows Quinn thinking back to a similar issue that wasn’t as recognized. Since this was done for Quinn, he felt guilty of being the cause. Now that he witnessed the beating and not just the aftermath and built his understanding of the issue.
