Captivate He screamed, throwing her as she stabbed and slashed at him in pure fury. He twisted her arm until the weapon fell out of her hand landing with a crash on the floor. She began to fight with whatever she could find; bread knife, ashtray, nails, fists, wine bottle, and even a potato peeler through her pure hatred at the man who only came to break the news. In the literary work Catch-22, the main character Yossarian is often caught in the midst of violence and deadly situations. He finds himself evading shootings from the enemy and protecting himself from his friend Nately’s whore while continuing to somehow survive as World War II beats at his doorstep. In Chapter 15, “Piltchard & Wren,” Captains Pilchard and Wren assigned Yossarian to fly to Bologna for ammunition dumps. However, as Yossarian and his crewmates were flying they suddenly began to be hit with heavy amounts of flak, causing the plane to crack and for Yossarian to have to take immediate, decisive defensive action. It is one of the only times the narrator shows Yossarian as having a sort of high intelligence and almost a gift for evasive action. One of Yossarian’s friends, Nately, falls in love with a woman he slept with as she falls in love with him. Her name is never mentioned as the narrator refers to her only as “Nately’s whore.” Later, Nately dies and Yossarian is sent to inform her of the news. The news caused her to fall into a chaotic state of trying to kill him. In the chapters afterward, she tries, again and again, to kill him through speed, disguise, and other methods so she can have revenge for her lover’s death. Yossarian survives these attempts on his life while the narrator holds intense power over others while Yossarian survives in the nick of
