From Faithless to Friend of God

Throughout Randy Alcorn’s Safely Home, we see one character being molded and challenged constantly. By the end of Ben Fielding’s journey to China, he comes to a much better understanding of Christianity than he had at home. God uses Ben’s old college friend, Quan, to guide him toward the truth. Though not easy in getting there, as he encounters many trials, Ben finally comes face to face with the reality of God. We see Ben on a journey from falling away from Christ after college, to returning to an understanding and eventually love for Him through Quan’s discipling. Trials in his life created a hatred for God. Death, separation, and desires for sin would cut away at Ben and shape him into the man Quan would house. Li Quan, the son of a very persecuted family, understood trials as well, and was able to sympathise and help him. “‘His way is not always easier. But it is always better.’” (Alcorn, pg 108) Quan opened Ben’s eyes to God’s justice as well as His love for him.

The dedication seen in Quan through imprisonment and death gave Ben an idea of the importance to follow reality. Searching for the knowledge of God, Ben overcame the desires for wealth and success. He came to a new realization of the Bible that Quan held so dear. Ben finally found the joy that Quan had with his family.

It was not an easy journey, but Ben put his full trust in Jesus Christ. The journey shows that despite sorrow in death, God makes all things for the good of His will. To change Ben’s life completely around, God used the solid faith of Quan, and his testimony in life.”’Yes, I have changed him. Li Quan will have a front-row seat in seeing how far the changes go.’” (Alcorn, pg 377) God can do great things through anyone.
