GIFT OF THE MAGI "Each sold the most valuable thing he owned in order to buy a gift for the other. " This is a quote from the tale " The Gift of The Magi" that expresses the theme of the story very accurately. This heartwarming tale has very deep meaning which is expressed through various scenarios by both the characters Jim and Della. In the story, both characters gave up something the loved for someone they loved. By doing this they are expressing how much they care for each other and how they would do anything to make sure that each other feels happy without showing how much they sacrificed for this to happen. The first and the foremost reason why " Sacrificing Valued Items for The People You Value Most" is the theme is because both Jim and Della gave up something for each other without thinking about how much it would cost them or how much sorrow they would endure after losing there beloved item. In the text, Della goes to Ms Sophronie 's shop to find out how much it would cost for her hair to be cut off, once Ms Sophronie says that she will give Della twenty dollars for her hair, immediately without second guessing herself Della gives Ms Sophronie her hair in exchange for the twenty dollars and immediately goes to the shop to buy a golden watch chain for Jim , but she doesn 't realize until later that Jim had given up his watch for a few beautiful and bejeweled combs that Della had been eyeing or along time.
