The residents of the annex had spent twenty-five months in the confined, tight space and if it had not been for a betrayer they could have been able to survive through the Jewish Holocaust. A suspect that could have caused the Franks to be turned into the Nazis army was Anton/Tony Ahlers. Ahlers strongly seemed to be the main suspect for the betrayal of the Franks, because he had worked for the dutch party, seem to have blackmailed Otto Frank, had many motives and means against Mr. Frank, and was confirmed by relatives that he had betrayed the Franks. Ahler had also blackmailed Otto Frank knowing that he was going into hiding and taking advantage of Otto as he was a vulnerable man at the time. Ahler requested a certain amount of money knowing that he could force Mr. Frank to do anything and he would, because he would not want him and his family to be turned into the Nazis. It had been known that in 1942, Ahler had come unexpectedly to have a secret meeting with Mr. Frank. In 1966, Ahler wrote in a letter that he had allowed and knew the Franks were in hiding as if they had needed his permission. Ahlers had many motives and means against Otto Frank as well. He used many threats to have Mr. Frank protect him and be on his side when needed. Ahler once threat to reveal that Mr. Frank had been dealing with Germany. His motives were to turn the Franks in, but when he could he took advantage and used it so Mr. Frank would do anything. The final piece of evidence that supports Ahlers as being a suspect was that his son and half-sister have both confirmed that Ahlers had betrayed the Franks. They have both told that Ahlers had bragged how he was able to turn his back on the Franks. Ahlers relatives have also told that he was really proud of his actions.
