In Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, every student Mica high school is all the same: same clothes, same hair, same earrings, same everything. When a new girl comes and upsets the social hierarchy, Leo and Hillari Kimble make it their mission to make Stargirl “normal.” Not even caring that it would hurt her feelings in the process. What Leo did not realize is that you can't fix something that is not broken, and falls in cahoots with Stargirl. Stargirl is willing to change herself for Leo, but he only cares about the acceptance of society. Stargirl was hurt because Leo said no one liked her so she changed herself to be liked. “Two days later Stargirl vanished.” (pg 138) “I whispered ‘Stargirl’ she battered her chocolatey eyelashes ‘Stargirl? What kind of name is that? My name is Susan.” (pg 139) This illustrates that Leo didn’t mind being rude, and hurtful to Stargirl but when she was gone he realized how much his life needs a Stargirl. No one ever went to the football games, and when Stargirl makes it interesant everyone becomes sad when she stopped showing up."A sense of disappointment fell over the stadium." "She wasn't coming." (pg 24) This explains all of the students bullied her and did not care, but when she made the games interesting, they were sad when she didn't come. They didn't cherish her when she was there. “In the hallways, she said hello to perfect strangers.” (pg 9) This explains that Stargirl was kind of everyone and even though they bullied her. She was selfless and thoughtful, and they still did not cherish her when they knew all the nice things that she was doing. Hillari didn't want StarGirl to sing to her on her birthday (because star girl sings to everyone on their birthday.) “And she sang ‘Happy Birthday.’ It was Hillary's name at the end of the song” (pg 21) This proves that even though Stargirl was kind all the students they were mean to her.
