In the book, Renegades by Marissa Meyer, the main character, Nova, changed as a person in the book due to her experiences at Renegades Headquarters. Before Nova went to the Renegades school, she was a hateful person who believed there was no good in the world. For example, on page 91, Meyer states, “‘Except there’s no way I could pretend to respect those righteous, arrogant, pretentious… heroes long enough to learn anything useful.’” In this section of the book, Leroy Flinn, and anarchist, is trying to convince Nova to try out to be a Renegade so she can spy on them however, she refuses because as a child the Renegades failed to save her family. Her tone shows that she is less than pleased with the Renegades because we know they failed her when she was younger. Thus, she doesn’t trust them or believe that they are capable of saving anyone but themselves. Next, on page 118, Meyer states, “Maybe Ingrid wasn’t wholly innocent. Maybe none of them were, but then, the Renegades weren’t, either.” During this part of the book a group of Renegades has stormed the anarchists home and is torturing Ingrid, one of the anarchists. It is during this part in the book where Nova decides there is no good in the world and that no one is innocent. She believes this because the Renegades were supposed to be the good guys that saved people, but in this instance they were being as cruel as everyone else. She believes that you have to save yourself because there are no good people to do it for you, everyone is
