Oryx and Crake is a novel set in a dystopian future in Eastern North America. This book was written by Margaret Atwood and published in May 2003. The book is written in the third person and there are three main characters, Oryx, Crake and Jimmy/Snowman, but Jimmy/Snowman’s thoughts are the only one that readers are able to know. Jimmy/Snowman is the main protagonist of the story. He is known as Jimmy when recalling stories from before the world ended and known as Snowman in the current world they live in after the world ended. He is also known as the leader of the Crakers, the modified humans created by Crake that now live in this new world. Crake was his best friend when they were younger and he was known as the smarter once since he was good at science while Jimmy was good with humanities and in the world, they live in science is held as a higher standard than anything else. Crake is a bit egotistical in the way that he believes that he solely can fix the world’s problems. Crake has a friend that works for him after the epidemic occurs and her name is Oryx. Oryx is a sex slave and she met Crake when she was assigned to Crake by the Watson-Crick Institute. Oryx takes care of the Crakers along with Snowman. Atwood wrote this novel in order to show readers what the world might become if society continues progressing in the way that it is now. Many people, including kids, are becoming desensitized to tragic events that occur and things that once were looked down upon if done.
