The Crucible by Arthur Miller was set in Salem in a puritan community. The book is about witchcraft or what the people of the town thought was witchcraft. John Proctor is one of the heroic characters in this book. He is loyal, loving and authoritative, but one of his many flaws is his temper. Throughout this book we see many different sides to Proctor John Proctor was born on March 30th, 1632. It is said that he grew up on his father’s farm. Proctor moved from Ipswich to Salem in 1666. John does any and everything to try to help his wife not to become guilty. He goes even further by getting people to say they committed the crime. He tells Cory to testify that Mr. Putnam prompted his daughter to confess to witchery. John is very loyal man to his wife. According to Arthur Miller a tragic hero is an average man with fault, one that lead to his own tragic downfall. In the play John Proctor is a common man who stirs a sense of sorrow, sadness, and pity in the reader. He wasn’t rich but neither was he poor; he served his community ver well. He maintained the respect for the people around him and also respected himself. This allows the reader to relate and understand him more. The tragic flaw of Proctor is his relationship with Abigail that ruins his reputation when he admits to lechery to the court. If Proctor would have dealt with the situation earlier than the whole drama of the situation would not have happened. Proctor was strong enough to stand up to what he had done and to tell people of the crime he had committed. Throughout all of his troubles and doubts, he still mans up to the crime that he committed.
