Odysseus “Raider of cities” is known for being a hero in the odyssey because of his hero like traits. Odysseus has the strength, courage and is a man of nobility. Odysseus is also a wonderful warrior who risked his life to fight the cyclops and help the rest of his crew survive, the cyclops was much bigger and stronger than Odysseus but he still chose to attempt to kill the cyclops after realizing that him and his crew would be stuck in a cave forever. In book 9 Odysseus and his crew threw out the great idea of sharpening a wooden stick and making it into a weapon. Soon after according to Odysseus in book 9 Odysseus claims “I drew it from the coals and my four fellows gave me a hand, lugging it near the Kyklops as more than natural force nerved …show more content…
Odysseus had made bad decisions in the story and put him and his crew in big danger the whole time. Odysseus was only doing what will benefit for him not for his whole crew, through out the story this led to mistrust by the rest of his men and lost the bond between them which made the journey home even harder. Odysseus’s decisions to stop at random islands instead of avoiding them caused him and his crew to fight against human eating monsters that will eat any one of them on sight. In book 9 when Odysseus and his crew stop at the land of the cyclops they end up finding a cave filled with sheep, and also with milk and cheese so they decide to eat some of it. Odysseus’s men had said to get some of the food then to leave but Odysseus told them to basically take their time eating, which resulted in getting 2 men eaten. Not knowingly with the great idea of blinding the cyclops and eating their food from Odysseus and his crew came consequences. After escaping the cave safely Odysseus and his men went there way on the ocean. Zeus didn’t let them get away so easily and wanted to punish. In the Odyssey paragraph 9 it stated “…But Zeus disdained my offering; destruction for my ships he had in shore and death for those who sailed them, my companions.” Homer 580..
