In the early 19th century, the United States of America was still just a young nation trying to find its way. Two parties emerged as competitors for the people’s votes and the opportunity to enact their view of how the young government should be handled. On opposing sides were Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. The Federalist philosophy of Hamilton was less trusting of the common man and more valid for the time period given the state of the United States in the early 19th century than the Anti-Federalist views, divisive actions, and philosophy of a strict constitutional interpretation of Thomas Jefferson. Alexander Hamilton authored a great many of The Federalist Papers of the late 18th century.
The Whig and Democratic took shape after the Bank War issue. A non-religious movement known as the Anti-Masonry became the first third party. The party established political patterns, organized voters, and partisan government. Even though they were successful they were not able to sustain as a political movement. The Whigs were gaining Jackson supporters while the Democratic were gaining support from upcountry farmers.

The name “Whig party” is also known as the English antimonarchist party. In reality the Whig Party was only founded in response to the Jacksonian War on the Second Bank of the United States. The people who founded the Whig party had a sever disagreement with how Jacksons presidency was going and on how he just seemed to do what he wanted and ignored the rulings of the supreme court and simply had no regard for the lives of the Native Americans. That is originally how the party came together but they stayed together due to their thirst for power in the white house. The Whigs valued was the authority of Congress over the power of the President.
It was through a combination of Whig ideas such as fear of an absolute ruler, the importance of a balanced government, and the need of a government protecting people’s rights that helped start the formation of American politics.
In 1891, a new political party was formed called the Populist Party, or People’s party. It was formed when the farmers of the South and West made an alliance with the Industrial Workers of the East. These different groups of people bonded over multiple goals in order improve the status of the United States in their favor. Some of the Populist Party’s goals were for free and unlimited coinage of silver and gold, the abolition of national banks, a new system of graduated tax income, and national ownership of transportation and communication, and the direct election of United States Senators. The first goal they wanted to achieve was for free and unlimited coinage of silver and gold.
The alliance around Adams and Clay came to form the opposition Whig Party in the 1830s. The Whigs assembled in opposition to Andrew Jackson and believed the federal government should direct and sponsor internal improvements, pass laws to promote agriculture, manufacturing, and the arts, and create a national bank to help develop the economy and spread prosperity across the country. They viewed the market revolution as the embodiment of civilized progress and that a robust federal government enhanced freedom. Democrats under Jackson reduced spending, lowered the tariff, killed the national bank, and refused federal aid for internal improvements.
