Infinite in Between By Carolyn Mackler Nobody is the same person they were four years ago. Our experiences shape who we become. Carolyn Mackler’s novel Infinite in Between tells the story of five different teenagers over four years of high school. Through different points of view, the reader gets varying renditions of a similar story . Zoe, one of the main characters, is the daughter of famous actress Sierra LayBourne. Zoe and her mom's relationship is portrayed as very strained. Her mom's always out filming, and when she’s home, Sierra is drinking. After Sierra checks into rehab, Zoe’s sent away from LA to live with her mom’s alienated sister in upstate New York. This is a huge lifestyle change for upscale Zoe. At first, Zoe’s lack of a father was the least of her worries. She had lived without a one her her whole life. Maybe she’d been a bit curious, but she never felt like he was a missing part of her life. Only, when she moved to New York, she came to find that she might be able to meet her father. Mackler writes, “One man from the crew had his arm around Sierra in several shots. He had brown hair and was on the short side. Zoe’s stomach flipped as she remembered what her mom had said. ‘Does it say what that man’s name is?’ Zoe asked. Her voice felt far away from her body.” (Mackler P. 257). The author could’ve been insinuating that Zoe recognised the mystery man to be her father. By seeing how close her mom and her possible birth father were, she guessed her knew his identity her whole life. That was especially hard for Zoe because she felt deceived by her own mother. How could Sierra have hid something so significant from her own daughter? Gregor, another main character, is also going through father issues. His father, who he was very close to, passed away. Similar to Zoe, he wasn’t sure what to do. He was mad as well. Mad at himself, mad at his brother, mad at his mom. His and Zoe’s reaction to a life-changing event were strikingly
