The Things They Carried contained a collection of stories that were produced by Tim O’Brien to show the life of the American soldiers in the Vietnam War. In the book, Jimmy Cross always carried his girlfriend Martha’s picture and letter. This picture could represent the loneliness that exists in Cross’s heart. Marijuana and tranquilizers were the methods that helped Ted Lavender calmed down and escaped from the war. He utilized this unique writing style because he wanted to write his own true war stories, a story that could happen in the real life.
