Born in England, Charles Robert Darwin is known around the world as the father of evolution. This is because of his theories on evolution and how it affects and improves different species in their environment by natural selection. The theories Darwin created while collecting specimens and exploring places like the Galapagos Islands and his own backyard lead him to change the way we see science and evolution today. He achieved this by daringly publishing his theories in one of his most famous books. Charles Darwin influenced the way we study the evolution of species by natural selection, today by establishing the foundation for modern evolutionary studies . The animal species that interested him the most were the finches. These finches all looked different depending on which island he found them on; however, all the finches looked strongly similar to the common finch found in mainland South America . Darwin then hypothesized that the finches on the Galapagos Islands stemmed from the one species of finch found on the mainland. The finches evolved based on what food could be found on the island they were located. These finches heavily influenced Darwin’s theories and his findings were recorded in his Journal . Another influence on Darwin’s life was Alfred Russel Wallace, a British naturalist like Darwin. While Darwin explored and developed his ideas on evolution by natural selection in South America, Wallace went to Asia. Wallace spent eight years in Indonesia collecting more than 100,000 insects, animals, and bird specimens and refining his own ideas on evolution . Wallace was the one who hypothesized that Animals evolved by adapting to their environments. Darwin and Wallace traded notes and letters back-and-forth; they even published a joint paper in 1858 arguing the theory of evolution and natural selection . In addition, while Darwin was writing The Origin of Species, Wallace was aiding him by supplying Darwin with birds from Asia to help progress his own theories
