Summary: Chapter One The most consistent aspect about life is that change is always occurring; it is the one thing that we can count on. This seems to be the main theme throughout chapter one. The Chapter opens up with a story about the 2011 earthquake that caused catastrophic damage to Japan and makes the point that when something dramatic occurs in nature, we often tend to think of it as a momentary lapse of normalcy within the environment and that things will go back to their normal stable stage.

In a population of individuals, variation in genotypes (in the form of alleles) exists due to random mutations arising in the genome of organisms, resulting in phenotypic variation from the unique combination of alleles of individuals. These unique combinations of alleles are then ‘tested’ by selection pressures, in which ‘beneficial’ alleles would confer organisms possessing that allele a higher chance of survival and reproduction; while ‘non-beneficial’ alleles either does not affect an organism’s survival and reproductive rate, or hinders it. The eventual long-term effect of natural selection would be evolution, which is the change in genotypic and/or allelic frequencies in a population over a (usually very long) period of time. Lamarck’s theory of use/disuse and acquired traits states that species evolve because of traits acquired through over-use and under use of body parts. Genetic variation arises when a random gene mutation occurs creating a species that differs slightly from the previous one. These species with their genetic differences try to adapt to the current environment. The species with the most favorable traits will survive while the species with the less desirable trait will eventually go extinct. Genetic variation can also lead to speciation which is the development of an entirely new species factoring time, genetic differences, and the environment. Adaptation is the species ability to adapt to its changing surroundings.
In this book, Darwin emphasized that natural selection is the major element of his theory, since it elucidates the connection between variation and the evolution of a species. Borrowing ideas from the theory of exponential population growth by English cleric and scholar Thomas Malthus, he argued that the chance of infinite growth of population sizes is dependent on the geography and natural resources. If these are limited, an infinite number of organisms will not be permitted to survive. As a result of limited food, water, shelter, and other resources, species must struggle for their existence and compete for their survival. According to Darwin, this will decide which species will survive and which will become extinct.

Although Charles Darwin said he did not know the exact laws of heredity or reproduction he assumed that the most important impact on the variety of species has inheritance not the environment. He knew that descendant organisms pass some specific traits to their offspring and this process is continuous and infinite. Darwin supposed that scientist can not fully understand how to apply laws of inheritance to parents and offsprings.
