Charles Dickens was a revered novelist best known for works such as A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist and David Copperfield. Every American student has read or heard Dickens at one point as either a story in a book, an animated movie in theaters or even a locally held production of A Christmas Carol in a church or school. No matter what everyone has heard Dickens’ work at one point or another in their life. He is by far one of the most memorable writers of his time. The mere mention of his name conjures up images of christmas spirits and grouchy old men that warm the hearts of many. One work that was very well known and even now still is would be Oliver Twist. Going back to Dickens’ childhood It’s easy to see how his father’s imprisonment and him being sent to work in a factory to pay it off would have lasting psychological scars. More than that though, it was a driving force and incredible influence behind his writing. As Marks explained, “Dickens drew on this period of his life in many of his novels, especially David Copperfield and Oliver Twist. John Forster, Dickens’s friend and biographer, records the author’s bitterness at being put to work at Warren’s Blacking Warehouse in order to help pay his father’s debts. Even worse than the degradation of the job for the young Dickens was the feeling that he had been abandoned.” It could be seen as a repeated theme: lost or abandoned children would have to reverse roles and take care of or become their parents’ guardians (Marks). Just like how Dickens himself was left behind to work and pay off his father’s debt when his family moved to Marshalsea, thus having to “take care” of his father. He was a prime example of how humanity changes and grows throughout their lives. Dickens showed how someone can adapt and change based on their histories and experiences and how their whole view of the world can shift. Dickens was a man of many faces: A writer, a dramatic reader, an artist, even an actor. He rose up from a terrible childhood where he could’ve easily fallen into becoming a thief or a drunk and instead made himself famous. His reputation lives on 150 years after his death and even now new forms of his writing come out constantly. Charles Dickens was an amazing writer with a rich life and many stories influenced by his family background, education, achievements, and other life experiences that lead him to become very successful in his
