America was an interesting land to explore for the Europeans who had previously fought for their dependence. One of the first travelers, Charles Dickens, was greeted by an onslaught of fans upon his arrival in America. He at first loved the attention, but soon grew sick of the obsessive behavior as he continued speaking in various cities. By the time he had journeyed to America and began writing letters later disclosed in American Notes for General Circulation in 1842, Dickens had already published some of his more famous works, such as Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby. He was horrified by the treatment of men and women who were enslaved, and that such a practice was still considered decent. Such violence was displayed publicly while advertising slaves on street corners. Dickens took the time to write out what each of the advertisements claimed about the slaves, and how each was discussed. Trollope, much like, Dickens, was against slavery. While speaking out against slave owners, she said "you will see them with one hand hoisting the cap of liberty, and with the other flogging their slaves" (Trollope, 180). She believed they claimed to be accepting, yet beat people of a different skin color in the same breath. However, she did retract some of her bitterness by admitting that "much kind attention" was paid to the health of domestic slaves (Trollope, 198). She also enjoyed the benefits of slavery, such as having a fire burning in a room that was already prepared for their stay, and they were waited upon hand and foot. Her experiences in America led her to believe that slavery was not a completely wrong institution, a stark contrast to her original beliefs on the matter.
