In “Fire in A Canebrake” by Laura Wexler, The book goes into detail about times when African Americans civil rights were front line news, and on July 25, 1946 four African Americans were lynched. Wexler showed the events of these racial confrontations and told about the political parts. FDR attempted to give the FBI authority in the Civil Rights cases due to the level of elevation and escalation of the movements that were taking place. Wexler proves how racism obscures the truth causing it to be increasingly hard or impossible to relive the racial tension. For the thesis of the story Wexler uses, “The only way for blacks and whites to live together peacefully in America in the twenty-first century is if we begin struggling to understand and acknowledge the extent to which racism has destroyed-and continues to destroy-our ability to tell a common truth.”

Anna Deavere Smith’s book Twilight: Los Angeles 1992, shows the different races involved in the LA riots and the true feelings of the LA riots from a range of different people. On April 16th, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. writes one of the most powerful and influential pieces in the nation’s history. King writes his “Letter from Birmingham Jail” after being sentenced to jail for protesting the mistreatment of blacks in Birmingham, Alabama. King passionately writes to defend fighting against racism to his fellow clergymen and responds to their concerns about taking direct action. To make his argument, King utilizes a series of literary nonfiction forms to provide a realistic image to his audience. Through doing this, King makes his argument stronger and more appealing to his audience.
How can a parent tell his/her child he/she cannot go to an amusement park or how white people hate them because of their color of their skin. In addition, he writes about how embarrassing it is to see signs that say “white” and “colored” and how black people are told “boy” “nigger” instead of their name or Mr/Mrs.. He argues that they don't understand because they do not have to face this type of discrimination and cruelty. His argument is, essentially, tapering in into their inner sensitivity. He wants them to imagine them self in the shoes of an African American and feel, hear, and sense the injustice, so they can understand why it is time to stop waiting and to take action.
In Sonny’s Blues by James Baldwin, Sunny, the main character, used his natural will to allow his music to express his inner thoughts and feelings. When Sunny was in high school he turned to drugs because he felt trapped by what he wanted to do versus what he was supposed to do. He wanted to be a jazz musician and go to the military before he finished high school, but his older brother, who was his guardian, did not understand why Sunny would want to do any of that: “Well, look, Sunny, I’m sorry, don’t get mad. I just don’t altogether get it, that’s all” (30). Using his natural right to do whatever activity he wants, Sunny learned how to play piano even if his brother did not comprehend why he wanted to play it in the first place.
In chapter one, "Privilege, Oppression, and Difference, Allan Johnson begins his argument that "difference is not the problem"( Johnson, pg 5 ). The author goes on to explain that difference by itself is not the problem, rather difference in conjunction with our ideas that cause fear. That being said, discrimination was a bigger problem in the past and it still is today. We starts with talking about Rodney King and racism he had received from police officers in Los Angeles. Johnson continues on with the idea that people are judged not for who they are or the things they have accomplished, but how they are perceived by others.

Thesis From the mid 1910s to the early 1960s there were many riots that occured, because of racial tensions built up between the the whites and the blacks world wide. Coming from Will Brown being accused of rapping a young white girl, and to Eugene Williams having rocks thrown at him causing him to drown. Today in class, we discussed a topic that is deeply engraved in American history yet widely avoided by many: race. More specifically, terms like “racist,” “All Lives Matter,” and “white privilege,” which may make some people uncomfortable but more than ever, need to be confronted and examined. We watched several videos containing a variety of people discussing their own personal thoughts and feelings on such terms to spark our own conversations on the same topics. After viewing the first video on the word “racist,” I began to reflect on my own actions towards other people.
