What if you had an IQ of a third grader for your entire lifespan? In the story ”Flowers for Algernon” by Daniel Keyes Charlie Gordon is the main character who wants to be innovative and has experimental brain surgery. After the surgery, Charlie was able to read books such as the grammar book and Robison Crusoe, he learns how to spell better and better grammar, his friends bully him, and he falls in love. The climax of this story was when Algernon bit Charlie and he noticed that Algernon was acting weird. Since Charlie was brilliant now so he experiment with Algernon and called it the Algernon-Gordon Effect. At the end of the story, Charlie leaves NY after Algernon dies. For example, we can see this event in the story when Charlie goes back to his old janitor job and Charlie tells his boss Mr. Donnegon what had happened to him. Charlie stated, ”I felt bad but Joe Carp came over and grabbed him by the shirt and said leave him alone you lousy cracker or I’ll break your neck. I didn’t expect Joe to take my part so I guess he’s really my friend ” (Keyes 11). By looking at this quote, we can see Joe Carp stands up for Charlie as a real friend would do. Frank Reilly came over to Charlie and tells Charlie,” If anybody bothers you or trys to take advantage you call me or Joe and we will set em straight ” (Keyes 11). This information tells us that Frank Reilly and Joe Carp have Charlie’s back and if somebody messes with him then they would beat him up or talk to him. Some may say that Joe Carp and Frank Reilly were mean to Charlie and treated him wrong at the start of the story. For instance, we can see this event happens when Dr. Nemur and Dr. Strauss said that they are going to use Charlie to make him smart. Charlie says he wants to be smart and normal. Charlie happily, ”I told him thank you doc you wont be sorry for giving me a second chance. And I mean it like I told him. After the operashun Im gonna try to be smart. Im gonna try awful hard ” (Keyes 2). By looking at the evidence, we can see Dr. Numer is telling Charlie they are going to operate on him to make him smart. Also, Charlie is very motivated to become smart and he would do anything to become smart. Others say they used Charlie because the doctors wanted fame and money. Nevertheless, Charlie didn’t care about fame or money he was motivated to be smart and normal like other people. He also didn’t care if it hurt
