What if you had the chance to increase your IQ level? In the story “Flowers for Algernon” written by Daniel Keyes, Charlie Gordon is the main character who wants to be smart and had experimental brain surgery. His “Friends” bully him and beat him up and he doesn’t know until after his surgery. After the surgery, Charlie is better at spelling and grammar. The climax is when Algernon bites him and stops doing the maze, he starts to realize that something is going on and he later finds out that Algernon has died from the brain surgery. I think Charlie should’ve had the surgery. First, Charlie should’ve had the surgery because he falls in love with Miss Kinnian. For example, we can see this event in the story when Charlie’s intelligence increases. He starts to realize how beautiful Miss Kinnian really is. Charlie expresses, “She’s only thirty-four! I think from the beginning I had the feeling that she was an unreachable genius–and very old. Charlie explains “ Everyone was looking at me and laughing and I felt naked. I wanted to hide myself.
