Charlie’s Journey Charlie Gordon experienced many positive things during his surgery. One thing he went through is falling in love with Mrs.Kinnian. Charlie says “I don’t understand why I never noticed how beautiful Miss. Kinnian really is.”
His findings also make him feel happy which is great to come from a discovery which he made after the surgery. In Charlie’s last progress report when he is saying personal goodbyes to everyone who helped him on the journey to becoming smart, he mentions, “Evry body feels sorry... I dont want that... Im going someplace where nobody knows that Charlie Gordon was once a genus and now he cant even reed a book or rite good [sic],” (Keyes 27). Charlie is moving out of New York because he does not want people to feel sorry for him anymore.
Mastery Assignment 2: Literary Analysis Essay Lee Maracle’s “Charlie” goes through multiple shifts in mood over the course of the story. These mood are ones of hope and excitement as Charlie and his classmates escape the residential school to fear of the unknown and melancholy as Charlie sets off alone for home ending with despair and insidiousness when Charlie finally succumbs to the elements . Lee highlights these shifts in mood with the use of imagery and symbolism in her descriptions of nature.
1. Charlie doesn’t feel like he belongs ever. Either he is not smart enough or too smart. There is never a happy medium with society. When he can tell he obviously is different it makes it harder when everyone points it out.
He thinks she might like him too. Secondly through Charlie’s situations he learns that ignorance is bliss by seeing the petition for him to leave his job. If he had not got the operation then he would have never known that almost everybody in the factory but one person wanted him to leave and quit his job. Ignorance is bliss is shown because Charlie does not understand why they want him gone or why they did not like him. That made Charlie sad, Charlie was fired that day and later that same day Charlie made a new friend.
His intelligence came with a price that made him rethink his entire situation. Charlie was happier with an IQ of 68 because he was oblivious to what was going on around him, people would treat him differently after the surgery, and he struggled with his identity. The first reason that Charlie Gordon was better off after the surgery is he got to experience love. To quote him, he said “I’m in love with Miss Kinnian”. But when Charlie got the surgery, he realized when his intelligence was wearing off, he got super depressed but he powered through the depression. One quote from the book that indicates depression is “please... please let me not forget how to read and write.” (keyes 25). Even though he is forgetting how to read and write and he is getting depressed, he powers through the depression. On the last page he says “im taking a cuple of books along and even if i cant reed them ill practise hard and maybe i wont forget every thing i learned.
Is a community capable of corrupting every thought in your mind or compelling you to take actions categorized as sins? Peer pressure, a desire to fit in, poor parenting and a plethora of other motives encourage young people to act in ways they might have never thought they could. However, as the symbol of the yin yang displays, there is good in the bad, and some young people defy the unrelenting, undertow coming from the waves of society, and instead take their own route to climb the ladder of greatness. In the novel, The Other Wes Moore, crafted by Wes Moore, both of the main characters are men with the same name, skin color and birth place, only differentiated by the actions they take—all of which are detrimentally influenced by their mothers.
Charlie Gordon is the only person to talk not only in the first but also in the third person. Charlie actually talks in third person is in his flashbacks. One of the reasons that he talks in third person in his flashbacks is because he does not recognize himself to the fact that he becomes smarter; so he calls himself a different Charlie. By having an operation done to him, Charlie continiously becomes smarter. As a result, he learns new information everyday at school and outside of it with much ease.
The surgery worked at first, but then he gradually lost his newfound intelligence. Even Though he ended up where he began, his life was very different. Although Charlie had a nice life before the surgery, it allowed him to realize that some parts of his life were different than he thought they were and because of this he was better off after the surgery. Throughout the story Charlie begins to realize that some of his best friends actually are just making fun of him because of his low intelligence.

Also Charlie was not as smart as most men so he didn’t think that at the time anything could go wrong. As Charlie progressed through time he reached his highest point. Then after that he started to go down in intelligence.
