Chemotherapy outcomes can be very rewarding, but may also have several risks throughout the duration of the treatment or even after. I know firsthand, lives can be saved by this type of treatment. My grandmother is a breast cancer survivor. I watched her suffer and undergo chemo and, in the end, she came out on top, but there are many lifelong side effects that come as a package deal with chemotherapy. Some women that develop breast cancer will receive chemotherapy or be offered it and must weigh the risks and benefits. My grandmother personally says she would never receive chemo again if her cancer were to come back. It is very common for this tragedy to become a turning point in a survivor’s life. Improving your personal overall health will help reduce the risk of the patient not having to fight once but twice. When a survivor has endured treatment like they have, these changes will seem minor. These changes are simple and easy. After treatment and returning back to “normal” life, a change in diet is very beneficial to breast health. Consuming fruits and vegetables and keeping the fat to a minimum is heart healthy and cleanses the colon as well.5 Along with your new diet, add exercise; it does not have to be strenuous. Walking 3 times a week can reduce the risk of breast cancer by 1/3 of women at high risk.5 A huge lifestyle change is eliminating smoking and reducing your alcohol intake to a minimum. Eighty percent of cancers would never occur if cigarettes were eliminated 5 Alcoholic beverages increase the risk of breast cancer. You may consume one drink maximum if you “must.” More than one will increase your risk.5 Making these lifestyle changes will increase your energy, reduce your risk of recurrence, improve your health in general., and keep your breasts as healthy as they can be post cancer.5 Life after chemo and breast cancer has various
