Before American settlers came to America, Native Americans lived here. The Great Plains were their home, and had lived here for many centuries. Some lived in communities, while others were nomads. Native Americans were divided into bands which consisted in around 500 people. They had their own government that controlled each band, but most of the people helped in making the decisions.
The Cherokee had several major objections to moving to new locations. The Cherokee wanted to stay instead of moving to a place such as Arkansas because it is “unknown” to them and is already occupied by the Indians. Therefore, the Indians would look at the Cherokee as if they did not belong or be seen as an enemy when the Cherokee meant no harm. Also the Indians were not really supplied by wood and water, which was bad for the Indians because they could not live as agriculturalists, but also bad for the Cherokee because they were worried there was not a lot of land for farming. Furthermore, the Cherokee had major objections because the people around the Cherokees were so different compared to them.
The Shoshone was a Native American tribe in the western Great Basin in the United States. This tribe was spread into the north and east Idaho and Wyoming. The Shoshone religion was Shoshone rituals. Their population was approximately 8000 members at first, but their population began to increase about 20,000 members. There were three classes in Shoshone tribe, which were the chief and shaman, trading partners, and the servants.
The Bannock tribe was a huge and important tribe with rich history and culture until the building of Fort Hall when the white settlers came, and that eventually led to their destruction. The history and the traditions of the Bannock tribe, which is where they were located, the food they ate, and the games they played like the relay races, is a huge part of who they are today. The Bannock’s lands were located in what is now known as Idaho, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, and into Canada. Another part of the Bannock tribe was its neighbors the Shoshone tribe.
The Mohawk Indians were part of the Iroquois confederacy. They spoke similar languages to other tribes part of the confederacy. Their economy was based on trading goods between tribes and to the Europeans. They were settled near the Mohawk river and the Hudson. After coming in contact with the Europeans, they became one of the wealthiest tribes in the confederacy.
The Hoh Native American tribe has lived amongst the Nature Bridge camp for many centuries and has many interesting topics to study such as the reservation, people, food, clothing, recreation, religion, myths and legends, the age of the tribe, and the important events on the history of the tribe. Because of these, the tribe is rich in history and culture, making it a great essay topic to study for my Nature Bridge trip of 2017. The Hoh generally live in the northwestern part of Washington, and they have an entire reservation where a majority of their population lives. This reservation is on the Pacific coast, on the mouth of the Hoh River.
Nonetheless, it is evident that they were one of the most peaceful people who were wise, and focused on being in harmony with nature and the world. The Iroquois creation story verifies that the Indians are not uncivilized or savages. Rather, it emphasizes the countless similarities they share with different cultures and how their ideas are not different to that of the rest of the world. The Natives have had a magnanimous impact on shaping Americans into who and what they are. They have taught them many precious lessons as well as values that allowed them to expand and build the vast country that stands erect today.
Ranging from the south Alleghenies mountain range all the way down to the south of Georgia and far west of Alabama, lived the Cherokee Indians. They were a powerful detached tribe of the Iroquoian family and were commonly called Tsaragi which translates into "cave people. " This tribe was very prominent in what is now called the U.S, but over time has been split up or run out of their land because of social or political encounters with the new settlers from Europe. Despite the dispersion or the split amongst this tribe, they still obtained their core religious beliefs, practices and ceremonies. Their detailed belief system, fundamental beliefs, significant meanings, and their connection to song and dance make up their religious system.
The Choctaw village is located in the southeastern of the United States aka modern day Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and Louisiana. They were forced to move to Oklahoma because US government has set “Indian territory” for the Indians to move to though few didn 't want to leave their home. Beside that fact about their village, they had a very stable village. The men hunted and went to war while the women farmed but mostly took care of the children and cook. Both genders did things to help their village so you couldn 't say the men did all the work while women did nothing.
On July 17, 1830, the Cherokee nation published an appeal to all of the American people. United States government paid little thought to the Native Americans’ previous letters of their concerns. It came to the point where they turned to the everyday people to help them. They were desperate. Their withdrawal of their homeland was being caused by Andrew Jackson signing the Indian Removal Act into law on May 28, 1830.
Scattered across the United States due to being driven from their homeland in the North Eastern area, the Shawnee Native American tribe became a diversely skilled group of fighters with leaders who still stand out in history today. The Shawnee tribe originated from the Ohio River Valley, but were forced out supposedly by Iroquois in the 1600s, and spread out to Pennsylvania, Illinois, or even as far as Maryland or Georgia. As time passed and Iroquois power weakened, the Shawnee were able to return to their home, only to be pushed out once more by white settlers. During the American Revolution, the Shawnee fought with the British against the colonists in hopes to keep their land and have the colonists removed. Following the war, the SHawnee
The Cherokee Tribe The Cherokee Indians referred to them selves Ani-Yunwiya witch means Principal People. Nobody really knows why their tribes name is Cherokee, people think that it comes from Choctaw witch means mountain people. There are two main theories of Cherokee origins. One is that the Cherokee, an Iroquoian-speaking people, are relative latecomers to Southern Appalachia, who may have migrated in late prehistoric times.
When the Europeans began their invasion of the Americas, the Cherokees were an agricultural people whose villages could be found throughout the American Southeast. Cherokee families were based on matrilineal clans. Matrilineal clans are extended family groups with names, tradition, and oral history. Membership in each clan is through the mother: you belong to your mother’s clan. To be without a clan was to be without human identity.
Native Americans had been a part of the New World way before the settlers ever made their way to America. One of the larger groups of Native Americans discussed during this time frame was The Iroquois. The Native Americans learned new things from the colonist. They learned new ways of doing things along with the settlers advanced technology that they brought with them. However, all was not always good between the groups.
The name “Sioux” is short for “Nadouessioux”, meaning “little snakes”, given to them by their spiteful long time rival the Ojibwa tribe. The Sioux community was divided into a organized nation of seven different, smaller tribes; later becoming known as: Oceti Sakowin, which translates into “Seven Council Fire” in the Sioux indigenous language. To keep their history alive, the Sioux practiced oral tradition in sharing their past, through the Siouan language and occasionally, they communicated through sign language. They were a dominant tribe in Minnesota that later migrated continuously through the northern Great Plains region following buffalo patterns. The Sioux depended on bison for most of their food source, clothing, and shelter.
