The Hoh Native American tribe has lived amongst the Nature Bridge camp for many centuries and has many interesting topics to study such as the reservation, people, food, clothing, recreation, religion, myths and legends, the age of the tribe, and the important events on the history of the tribe. Because of these, the tribe is rich in history and culture, making it a great essay topic to study for my Nature Bridge trip of 2017. The Hoh generally live in the northwestern part of Washington, and they have an entire reservation where a majority of their population lives. This reservation is on the Pacific coast, on the mouth of the Hoh River. Because the Hoh were coastal people, they settled in one area and did not move around like nomadic people. Therefore, their clothing was not made to travel, so it wasn’t bulky or crafted to last for long periods of time. The clothing was also thin and light because of the coastal climate they lived in. The materials used to form the garments consisted of cedarwood, bark, animal leather, and more commonly, wool. Currently, the Hoh are about 130 years old, beginning from the time when the reservation was established in 1893. Since the area of the Hoh reservation was mapped in 1792, it has been 225 years. Although the Hoh tribe is not nearly as old as many others in the area, the council predicts that the Hoh will thrive for many years. Since the Hoh tribe was established, there have been many important events that have helped to shape the tribe we know today. First, in 1700 there was a colossal earthquake and a tsunami, which shaped the land that the Hoh people live on today. Second, in 1792 the area of the reservation was charted by Captain George Vancouver. Next, the Hoh tribe Reservation was established in 1863 by the Executive Order. Last, the Hoh people adopted a constitution that talks about the territory, the governing body, their amendments, and many more important issues. This constitution is very similar to that of The United States . Overall, the Hoh tribe and it’s people have been a pleasure to research. It’s rich culture, history, and legends are very interesting and unique as opposed to other Native American tribes I have researched in the past. The Hoh tribe and its reservation will add to my Nature Bridge experience, and I am very excited for our upcoming trip to the area in
