Cherry Hill, New Jersey is a very urbanized place. It has many major roads, all lined with homes condos and apartments. Before all of this Cherry Hill was full of farms, and open land. The only thing that remains from this time is a 67-acre farm, named Springdale farm. This farm is located on a very busy road, Springdale road. It was established in 1949 by Mary and Alan Ebert. They supplied fresh produce to Campbell soup in Camden such as tomatoes and also to Seabrook Farms who packed frozen foods. They also earned money by a roadside stand, where travelers bought food from. The farmers also started in the agritainment business, by making corn mazes, pick-your-own crops, hay rides, and more. Every plant has a season, for example tomatoes, eggplants, and corn grow during the summer. All of these plants need pollen, except certain leafy greens, and also corn, which pollinates itself. Another thing that plants use is fertilizer. The original fertilizer was fish and things like that but today the farmers at Springdale use Miracle Grow. An interesting fact about corn is that it makes noise when it is hot, and it starts raining after a long period of no rain. One stalk of corn needs about 83 gallons of water a day, as corn is part of the grass family. If there is consistent good weather it takes about 75 days for corn to grow. If it doesn’t get cold corn can grow all the way until October. While broccoli is a very different plant broccoli also does not need pollinators, like corn. However that is because it doesn’t need pollen at all, slightly different than the corn since corn needs pollen but not pollinators. Broccoli doesn’t grow when it is hot. When it is cold at night broccoli can actually freeze over and thaw out the next morning and be fresh. It can do that until it is ready as long as it thaws the next day. All of these crops can be difficult to maintain, and all of that hard work can be ruined by a certain type of precipitation called hail. Hail can destroy all of the farms crops in 15
