In the film “Chicken Run”, the directors Park and Lord create impact in the pie machine scene by using a variety of cinematography techniques. Throughout the beginning, middle and end it moves from tension through to panic and eventually joy.

At the beginning of the scene, the director uses cinematography techniques to create tension. The techniques the directors use are lighting, sound and camera angles. For example, the dramatic music and a high camera angle are combined as you look down on the machine, this is to make Ginger and Rocky look small and insignificant compared to the huge machinery. The techniques are used to move from tension through to panic by creating a frightening scene. For example, when Ginger and Rocky get trapped inside the pie oven, the camera technique used was panning, it viewed the flames blazing away which showed a large amount of fear in Ginger’s eyes. Combined with this technique was foley effects, this was to show how fierce and terrifying the flames were surrounding them, this was also merged with under lighting that was shown as the bright red oven floor underneath Ginger and Rocky. Another combination of techniques used in the middle of the scene to create rising panic was sound and lighting, this was shown when Ginger and Rocky were stuck in pie dough about to get rolled flat. The sound playing was short suspenseful music to create mood in the scene, it built up until Ginger and Rocky luckily escaped from the dough. The lighting also links through to the sound in this part of the scene, it was shown as harsh lighting as it sharply defines the shadows from Ginger and rocky. These combinations of techniques work together to make a more extreme effect of rising panic and to also prove that the emotions were emphasized during the scene with proof from the frightened look on Ginger’s
