By analyzing child-rearing practices among inner-city African American parents we are able to observe the effects that racial discrimination has on influences of stressors relating to living in an urban area. Taking into account what negative influences are endured by minority children we are able to identify what may lead to substantial risks for academic and mental health difficulties. 2b. Mary McKernan explores the significance of parental racial socialization practices which may promote academic success and mental well-being among African American youth through a cognitive perspective. This perspective focused on the social forces such as parents and teachers which impact the development of cognitive abilities that may shape social activities and the choices taken to account for our actions. They were required to set two days aside, the first would be scheduled for parents to receive progress report cards and arrange for a parent-teacher conference. Data was gathered from 18 participating educators who were racial mixed. In order for parents and teachers to participate, informed consent was obtained. The parents would complete questionnaires before their parent-teacher conferences. In return parents would be given a $5 supermarket gift card.
