By analyzing child-rearing practices among inner-city African American parents we are able to observe the effects that racial discrimination has on influences of stressors relating to living in an urban area. Taking into account what negative influences are endured by minority children we are able to identify what may lead to substantial risks for academic and mental health difficulties. 2b. Mary McKernan explores the significance of parental racial socialization practices which may promote academic success and mental well-being among African American youth through a cognitive perspective.
