Have you ever read Cinderella? It’s a beautiful story in which a prince falls in love with the underdog. However, behind all of the romance and glass slippers, there is a valuable life lesson; remain kind when surrounded by bad behavior, and you will be rewarded. Stories like these, such as red riding hood, Rapunzel, and the 3 little pigs etc. made it so that children could learn simple values while being engulfed with the beauty and glamour of the fairytale. Throughout the stories, human nature was camouflaged in characters so subtly that the children were never aware of the capabilities of mankind. These stories provided direction for the children to guide them in the future. These stories provided significance and a very important feeling of hope. While he is stranded in the Pacific, the tarpaulin, boat, life jackets and the whistle all were orange these things in some way and helped keep Pi alive. “ I speak in all modesty as I say this, but I discovered at that moment that I have a fierce will to live...I built a raft. The oars, if you remember, floated. And I had life jackets.” (164) The reason that orange is tied to Hinduism is due to the fact that a majority of temples are the color of orange and generally are decorated with marigolds. (The Significance of Yagya and Saffron Colour in Hinduism, 2016) In the book, the temple is represented by the boat as it is a safe place to go and is Pi’s haven in a sense. Priests also generally stay within the temple most of the time and don’t always react with people, this resembles Richard Parker. Priests dress in robes the color of orange live their life off donations; Richard Parker is in fact also orange and lives his life off of the food Pi gives
