In the “Children on the battlefield” article written by Marcie Schwartz explains that boys under 18 have served in many wars including the Civil War. They would join by lying about there age, having their parents sign them up, or there teachers would influence the recruiting officer to let them join. Some recruiting officers would look the other way so that they could met their quota. When they were enlisted they had many hard and dangerous jobs to do and also also served on military ships. The boys often were home sick and did not know what they wanted to do with there life.
“Is life in the army what Charley expected?” The book “ Soldier’s Heart” by Gary Paulsen features a fifteen year old boy by the name of Charley Goddard. His fantasy of war isn’t anywhere near the harsh reality the soldiers really have to live through. As the North begins to take the lead in the Civil War Charlie believes that he should join the Minnesota Volunteers because, ever since his father was killed by a fatal blow to the chest by a horse, he feels like he has to be the man of the house.
Memoirs of a Boy Soldier ★★★★ I rated this book 4 stars because I really enjoyed reading this book and learning about what goes on with the children(mainly boys) out in Sierra Leone. It was interesting knowing that these are the kind of things that happen in the third-world countries and the children are forced to live through it. 2. First of all, every male over the age of 14 was forced to “...undertake military duty” (Doc. B). All males had to join the army regardless of whether they believed in the cause or not. It seems cruel to force someone to experience all that bloodshed due to the amount of killing involved, the risk to their own life
How would you feel if you were recruited as a soldier during war? Since 2001, the participation of child soldiers has been reported in 21 on-going or recent armed conflicts in almost every region of the world. The importance of this is portrayed in Ishmael Beah’s memoir A Long Way Gone. The author believes that innocent kids should not be selected to fight as soldiers, lose their innocence killing people, witnessing violent scenes and suffer because of war.

Drummer boys sometimes fought too, but most importantly they always looked out for each other. The column marched forward as the sound of cannon fire thundered in the distance. The soldiers marched forward fearing what was ahead. At the front of the marching column, a young excited boy led the men into battle while beating his drum to the tune of “Battle Cry of Freedom”.
I think the first time I read the chapter I didn’t think abou the ages of these boys; they are really boys not yet men. They are eighteen and nineteen years old. That is my age. I am not a soldier. I cannot even pick a college to go to and boys my age were fighting a war.
In the short story “War Party” by Louis L 'Amour, a fictional woman named Ma travels across the country with her family to find a new home near the mountains in the western frontier. During the trip, her husband dies by an arrow to the lung which was shot by an Indian. In the mid-19 century, there was a law that if a woman’s husband dies while they are traveling on the Oregon Trail then the women would have to either remarry or head back to the eastern coast. Ma refused to remarry or go back to their old home. Ma was very independent and smart, but since she was a woman the people in her wagon train pressured her to go back.
When you picture war, what do you see? Is it people with tanks and Ak-47s fighting each other? Maybe adults in camo fighting in the desert? Or perhaps even an image from your Call of Duty video game pops into your head. But what most people don’t imagine is children, ages 9-15, fighting each other and dying at the hands of guns and other weapons.
In the Civil War, boys under 18 often signed up for the military. Although they were underage, their parents, religious leaders, and school teachers would support their decision to enlist. Sometimes boys would lie about their age or run away and change their names in order to enroll. For boys who were honest about their age, they would be drummer boys or bugle players. Although, they would have to learn several different commands with their instrument, they also used their instruments for fun.

In the text, “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh”, by Ray Bradbury, a young boy is facing a conflict. Joby, a 14 year old Drummer in the army, is awaiting the battle the next morning. He is nervous and scared because he feels vulnerable against the muskets . The general of their battalion helps him steady himself, and Joby feels better.
Assignment page Video Where many children all over the world merrily and freely live under the protection of the law, for others, this is a distant reality, they live in a world where they’re battling poverty, stripped of their childhood and basic human rights are expunged, they’re the innocent victims of conflict, and war is made to seem their one and only duty, not to mention that these are children no more than 10 years of age. They are put into a situation where it’s to kill or be killed. The United Nations defines a child soldier as, “Any person under 18 years of age who is part of any kind of regular or irregular armed force or armed group in any capacity.” Since the past 15 years, child soldiers are being used in almost every region of the world. Unlike most children, who go to school, they’re abducted from their families and forced into becoming a child soldier, where living conditions are beyond imaginable.
In the world today, there is more than 25 countries who still actively use children in warfare. Child soldiers are human beings under the age of 18 who participate in military actions. They are evidently cheaper to maintain and to train than adult soldiers. They are also more loyal and obedient because the young respect their elders. It has been noted that estimately, 300 thousand children were recruited to fight and perform in war (Child Soldiers.)
