China's One Child Policy Essay

During the twentieth century, China faced a large overpopulation problem which was caused its resources to deplete, as well as hurt its economy. To solve this problem, they instituted a one-child policy in 1979 to decrease their rapidly growing population. However, on October thirty-first 2015, the government relaxed this policy allowing two children instead of one. The recent change from a one-child to a two-child policy in China will not have immediate benefits, but will have positive, long-term effects. It was altered in hopes to fix the issues caused by the former law and is an attempt to mend the decreasing workforce populous, encourage fair treatment towards women, and reevaluate control of Chinese citizens from the government. Taylor Crehan, a frequent contributor to Eagle News said,“This decision made by the Communist Party is nothing but a power move. In the past, China’s government has gone to the extreme to have extensive control over its citizens.” (Crehan). China is no stranger to controlling its citizens, as shown when it initiated the Communist government, which today is still the body that that dominates and controls Chinese politics. While the policy was first created to control population, its change may simply be for another power grab for the Communists. Simon Denyer, the bureau chief for the Washington Post in China writes, “Experts on Chinese affairs, including Wang Feng at the University of California at Irvine, have long warned that the country was heading toward a “demographic precipice” that could challenge the legitimacy of Communist Party rule” (Wang). If enough of the population had been fed up with this policy for too long, their unhappiness would eventually provoke change in the government, which China had seemed to take advantage of before it happened.
