Sadness, misery, and hope. These would be the three words that I would use to describe the childhood of Adeline Yen-Mah. In the novel Chinese Cinderella, by Adeline Yen Mah, the author tells the inspiring and sad story of her childhood. Although Adeline faces many challenges, she starts to overcome them with the help and support of Aunt Baba and Yeye. Aunt Baba supported Adeline in many ways. For example, Aunt Baba told Adeline, "You can be anything that you set your mind to be," (Yen-Mah 78). This confirms that Aunt Baba believes in Adeline 's skill and intelligence. I do not think that Adeline would have survived her abusive childhood without the support of Aunt Baba and Yeye. I think this for many different reasons. First of all, when Yeye says, “I have faith in you,” (Yen-Mah 181) it leads me to believe that without his uplifting speech, Adeline would have gone on thinking that she is worthless. This proves that Yeye has faith in her and that he thinks that she is very intelligent. Secondly, when Aunt Baba says, “... you’ll be able to become anybody you want,” (Yen-Mah 121) it lifted Adeline up and made her a bit more positive. This shows that Aunt Baba thinks that Adeline is exceptional. This also proves that Aunt Baba thinks that Adeline can do whatever she sets her mind to. These prove to me that Adeline would not have overcome her childhood without these people in her life. Adeline Yen-Mah overcame some very difficult situations with self-esteem, abuse, bullying, and more. Aunt Baba and Yeye helped and supported Adeline through every step she made, and I believe that was the reason that Adeline Yen-Mah is so successful today. In conclusion, I believe that Aunt Baba and Yeye were very important figures in Adelines life and they helped her get through and overcome her abusive and miserable
