A major theme that is examined throughout many cultures is the preservation and destruction of individualism. These shifts in individualities have served as a mechanism for both understanding and appreciating the historical meaning and relevance involving these tribeswomen. The short stories and academic journals that help highlight these instabilities include: Chip Brown’s The King Herself, Karen Lange’s Himba: Consulting the Past Divining the Future, John Keshishian’s Anatomy of a Burmese Beauty Secret, and publication: Face It: The Impact of Gender on Social Media Images by Jessica Rose and others. The article surrounds the reign of Hatshepsut, a female Pharaoh from the Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt. During this epoch, women were not properly fit for the king’s role. Brown states, “Religious belief dictated that the king's role could not be adequately carried out by a woman” (8). Instead, the kingship was theoretically meant to be passed down to the son. As a result, Hatshepsut synthesized “images of queen and king” of herself by resembling both masculine and feminine tendencies (Brown 8). However, as time went on Hatshepsut laid to rest residual issues dealing with gender competencies. She began portraying herself fully as a male with traditional pharaoh headdresses. Brown states, “She had herself depicted solely as a male king, in the pharaoh's headdress, the pharaoh's shendyt kilt, and the pharaoh's false beard without any female traits” (8). Eradicating her own individuality, Hatshepsut’s success as a Pharaoh came as reason for this. A reason being, gender roles were solely dominated by masculinity traits. Consequently, the narrator in The King Herself, “Many of her statues, images, and texts seem part of a carefully calibrated media campaign to bolster the legitimacy of her reign as king-and rationalize her transgression” (Brown 8). As being a part of Pharaoh Lineage, Hatshepsut understood that devising an approach of a male would likely cause her reign to be prolonged. In further support, research regarding gender stereotypes in video games suggested that female characters are characterized as highly sexualized beings while male characters possess exaggerated strength, hypermasculinity, aggressiveness, and detached. They are also less likely to display helping or nurturing qualities (Robinson, Callister, Clark, & Phillips, 2008).
